Working through the Centre for Community Partnerships, the University of Toronto has built an exciting partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to support the Tutors in High School Classrooms Programme. Through this programme, U of T students will have the opportunity to provide volunteer tutoring to High School students in need of academic support.
This is an opportunity for you to use your knowledge and skills to benefit students in the secondary system. If you are selected, we will provide you with the training and preparation to help build capacity in your local community and to contribute to the City of Toronto’s efforts to revitalise our neighbourhoods.
Application Process: Recruitment is now closed for 2011-2012. Applicants will complete the online application form and be contacted for an interview prior to being assigned a school.
Please note: These are volunteer positions.

TUTORS IN HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOMS 2011-2012
Tutor’s Statement of Understanding
I understand/agree to the following:
Nature of the Work
All tutor activities are performed under the direct supervision of a teacher.
Activities may include the following:
Professional Conduct
I agree to contact the school to advise them of changes in my tutoring schedule and of any days I will not be able to work due to sickness.
I understand that I am to have a professional relationship with the students at all times and that I am not to be left in a classroom to supervise students on my own.
Criminal Record Check
The Toronto District School Board requires all volunteers/employees working in a school setting to provide official criminal record check clearance. Tutors in this program must obtain the OESC card before they may begin the assignment.
Tuberculosis Test
The Toronto District School Board requires all volunteers/employees working in a school setting to undergo a tuberculosis test. The tuberculosis test will be done as soon as a position has been confirmed. A TB test can be done at a physician’s office or a walk-in clinic. There is no charge for this test; it is covered by OHIP. The physician will provide me with a note indicating whether or not I have active tuberculosis. If I have active tuberculosis, I understand my position will be terminated immediately. I will hand in the Doctor’s note to the Principal to keep on file at the school.
I understand and agree to the above Statement of Understanding.
(to be signed in-person at tutor orientation and training)
Note: If you are selected as a tutor, you will be required to attend an Orientation and Training session as well as a follow-up session after the placement in June. The session details (i.e. date, time & location) will be sent to the tutor by a programme staff member.
